The truth the politicians don't want us to read...
Most people know that the European Union is an expensive waste of space. Indeed, the money Britain wastes on the EU every year could pay for a million hip replacements each year or another £8 on the state pension. But most people don't realize the extent that the European Union interferes in the decisions that affect our daily lives.
That's because the government refuses to reveal the true percentage of legislation that is derived from Brussels. The nearest they have come to an admission of how impotent they are comes from a 2006 statement by the Trade Minister that “about half” of all UK legislation with an impact on business, charities and the voluntary sector stems from EU directives (Official Report, House of Lords, 29 June 2006). Even this shockingly high figure is almost certainly an under-estimate. The German Government has admitted that more than 80 per cent. of German laws are now decided by Brussels. In 2007 alone the EU generated over 2,000 regulations, all of which passed automatically into British law. What’s worse, under the Lisbon Treaty, a further massive slice of decision making authority in the fields of energy, foreign policy and immigration is to be transferred to the EU.
The fact is that Westminster - and Holyrood, Cardiff and Stormont - are making fewer and fewer of the decisions that actually matter.
As the former Minister Peter Lilley MP puts it: “Once powers have been transferred, Ministers engage in a charade of pretence that they still retain those powers. Even when introducing measures that they are obliged to bring in as a result of an EU directive, they behave as though the initiative were their own. Indeed, Ministers often end up nobly accepting responsibility for laws that they actually opposed when they were being negotiated in Brussels. They took the rap for costly and troublesome home improvement packswhich have added to the woes of the housing market even though they were actually mandated by a Brussels directive. Similarly, they took the rap for fortnightly bin collections, hospital reconfiguration and a number of other measures, even though they had all been triggered by directives from Brussels.” (House of Commons, 3 June 2008).
Of course, the politicians have a vested interest in keeping quiet about the truth. Otherwise, after all, people would start to ask what they’re paid for and what benefit there is in remaining in the undemocratic, fraud-ridden European Union.
'Time for Truth' leaflets...
Campaign for an Independent Britain has published a series of leaflets on how many of important decisions that affect us all are made by Brussels rather than by our own politicians. Please help us get the truth out by helping us distribute these leaflets in your community.
The Campaign for an Independent Britain is conducting a UK wide petition with signatories being asked to agree with the simple statement: "I want the UK to leave the European Union". If you want the lies to end, please sign up!
