The French electorate voted by 55% to 45% against the EU Constitution on 29 May 2005.
The Dutch voted by 62% to 38% against on 1 June 2005.
As the constitution must be ratified by all 25 member states, this means that the constitutional treaty is legally dead.
Undoubtedly, however, attempts will be made to reverse this outcome. As Jean-Claude Juncker (Prime Minister of Luxembourg, which holds the EU Presidency) cynically put it in the week before the French poll: "The countries that have said 'no' will have to ask themselves the question again."
