Welcome to the home page of the Campaign for an Independent Britain.

The Campaign for an Independent Britain is a non-party political campaigning organization of people from all walks of life who recognize that continuing British membership of the European Union poses grave threats to our liberties, independence, and economic prosperity.

We believe that Britain should leave the European Union and that the corrupt, undemocratic, obsolete and fraud-ridden EU should be superceded by modern, demcratic structures that enable the peoples of Europe to co-operate without loss of any nation’s freedoms and way of life.

The Campaign for an Independent Britain seeks the repeal of the European Communities Act 1972 under which EU directives take precedence over UK law. Once self-government has been recovered, the United Kingdom would be free, as an independent state, to co-operate and trade with its neighbours in Europe and with countries elsewhere in the world without the restrictions imposed by EU membership.

Britain’s relationship with the European Union is one that sits above party politics and one doesn’t have to be a member of any particular political party to be concerned about the ever-growing power of the EU. In Campaign for an Independent we have members from all the major political parties, trades unionists, environmentalists, businessmen, students, journalists as well as members of both Houses of Parliament who are united in their belief that Britain’s membership of the European Union has been a great error for this country.

United we're stronger

Campaign for an Independent Britain was was formed in 1976 as the Safeguard Britain Campaign. It is the oldest significant Eurosceptic organization in the UK and it is not too much of an exaggeration to say that without CIB not only would no-one have heard of the word 'eurosceptic' but the mass opposition to the European Union that now exists in this country simply would not exist.

Campaign for an Independent Britain provides co-ordination and unity for the various branches of anti-EU opinion that exist in the country. We have members from across the political spectrum, members of all major parties and people who are not supporters of any political party. Indeed, CIB was founded as a coalition of groups. The organizations that came together to create CIB include:

Today, we co-operate fully with the other Eurosceptic movements that have followed our lead. Groups with which we work closely, most of whom have representation on our national committee, include:

In addition, CIB was the founder of the Alliance Against the European Constitution, to which over 20 groups are affiliated, and The European Alliance of Euro-Critical Movements (TEAM) which unites nearly 60 organizations in more than 20 countries. No organization has done more to promote constructive unity, dialogue and mutual support across the Eurosceptic movement.

CIB Chairman Dr Bob Spink MP is also Chairman of the Pro Referendum Rally steering group.

Support for nurses?

With heathcare under threat of cuts and EU-led privatization, should we be handing over the equivalent of 220,000 nurses' salaries to Brussels each year?
